Book Review - The Gathering

The Gathering by Isabelle Carmody (Puffin Books, 1993)

The Gathering is a super-natural adventure story with a twist.

It was named the Book of the Year in 1993, and was a joint recipient of the Children’s Literature Peace Award - and for good reason too.

The story orbits around five children who, led by the mysterious Lallie, fight against the dark, in their small seaside town of Cheshunt. Their plight to stop the dark will require them to fight against the Kraken- a person who holds power over their town.  With the odds stacked against them, as well as the entire town, the fight seems impossible to Nathaniel Greene, the main character. But they must win or all is lost.

The Gathering is such a great book, because it combines heart-stopping action as well thoughtful questions that make you think.

I would recommend The Gathering to anyone who enjoys action, mystery, and magic.  In conclusion, The Gathering is an amazing book that is definitely worth taking the time to read.
